When You Don’t Know What Comes Next
Why Mindful IP
Throughout my career in Intellectual Property Recruiting, I have seen how much uncertainty, pressure and responsibility IP professionals carry. Through my own exploration and practice of meditation, I have also come to understand the value of pausing, becoming present and returning to our inner center.
I believe the worlds of Intellectual Property and Meditation have a meaningful place to meet. Mindful IP begins on September 19 in memory of my sister, on her birthday. It is my hope that this new journey will offer IP professionals a quiet place to pause, breathe and reconnect with themselves.
Intellectual Property Professionals spend their days working with uncertainty—protecting ideas whose future value cannot yet be known, anticipating challenges that have not yet arisen, and making consequential decisions with incomplete information.
Yet uncertainty is not only part of the work. Sometimes, it becomes personal.
You may be waiting for a decision, reconsidering the direction of your career, carrying a demanding workload, or simply wondering what comes next.
In this moment, you do not have to know.
You only need to pause, breathe and return to where you are.
A Short Meditation
Sit in a comfortable seated position.
Now close your eyes.
Become still and feel your breath.
It is all right to have thoughts during meditation. When thoughts arise, simply notice them and gently return your attention to your breath.
Be kind to yourself.
Now let us begin. We are going to do this for just a short while.
Breathe in, following the in-breath.
Notice the natural pause between breaths.
Then follow the out-breath.
Continue following your breath for the next few minutes, allowing yourself to become still and noticing any change in your energy.
When you are ready, open your eyes.
Now get to work.
A Thought to Carry With You
You do not have to know what comes next. Pause, breathe and return to where you are.
